What Inspired The Squid Game & What Has Been Inspired By It — Take A Dive Into The Squidverse

It’s extremely rare that an amazing idea comes out of absolutely nowhere.

That’s not a complaint, it’s just the way humans work, and it’s brought us all kinds of wonderful and amazing things.

If you look at the wonderful things that are entertaining us today, you can often find a trail into the past of the things that inspired their creation, and another into the future, of the new creations they’re inspiring today.

The popular show “Squid Game” is certainly no exception, but where some of its inspiration came from may be quite a surprise, and the new art, games, and technology it’s inspiring right now certainly are.

Where Did It Begin?

In the beginning, there was the Manga.

This is a phrase that could be an introduction to many articles about the origins of popular shows today, and considering what we know about Squid Game, it should be no surprise.

What is surprising is just how truly brutal the original manga that inspired Squid Game creators gets.

If you haven’t read it yet, you should be warned, it’s more than a little graphic.

You can find it with a quick search for Kaiji, created by Nobuyuki Fukumoto in 1996.

Of course, Kaiji isn’t the only inspiration for Squid Game, but according to Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of the show, it was a major factor.

Where Is It Now?

Following the trail of inspiration and creation leads us down a twisting path, into all kinds of dark alleys.

There have been scams and plots that are oddly reminiscent of the show’s main themes, though without the graphic deaths — but there have also been some remarkable new creations.

One of the most popular creations currently flooding the markets is a squid-themed cryptocurrency, but the creators aren’t stopping at just making tokens, they want to create a universe.

Where Will It Take Us?

This is the most interesting question and in some ways the hardest to answer.

Where it will lead us in the near future seems to be mapped out, though not yet available to the public — where it will lead in the far future, that can’t be answered yet.

In the near term, the developers are working on a squid-themed “Quidiverse” game that’s going to take users into the metaverse, likely with some kind of crypto-interaction and blockchain rewards.

They recently announced the launch of a large selection of NFTs that are eventually going to be tied in with the Quidiverse game, probably providing unique rewards, abilities, and benefits to holders of the original tokens.

That’s the very next step in the evolution of the squid and the new creations it has inspired, but where it’s going to lead after that — no one can say for sure yet.

If anyone does know, they’re not talking.
